This land was once ruled by the Incas in the north but the Spanish later took
over the region in the 1500s. Ecuador later ceded from the Great Colombia
Republic in 1830. The country has been ruled by many dictatorships since
1968. There was a peaceful change of power in 1979 to a democratic civilian
government.
The economy was dependent on its petroleum (oil) exports but that has
declined causing economic difficulties. Ecuador has suspended paying its
interest on the $8.2 million debt it has after an earthquake left 20,000 people
homeless and destroyed its oil pipeline. Ecuador and Peru have arguments
about their Amazon Valley boundary.
The Galapagos Islands are under ecuador's governance and have many rare
animals, including the huge tortoises that bear the islands name.
